The Many Health and Wellness Benefits of CoQ10

/ / Health

According to WebMD, the nutrient coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an antioxidant that exists naturally in the body and is also found in food. This antioxidant also occurs in supplement form, and it provides a range of health benefits.

Improvement for Patients with Parkinson’s disease

Individuals with Parkinson’s disease might experience an improvement in functioning with a CoQ10 supplement. A 2002 study supported by the American Medical Association and published in the Archives of Neurology found that when patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease took a 1200 mg CoQ10 supplement every day, their disease progressed more slowly over the course of 16 months when compared to patients who took a placebo. CoQ10, therefore, seems to be helpful as an adjunctive treatment for patients with Parkinson’s disease, as it could improve their daily functioning.

Helps Reduce Blood Pressure

CoQ10 can serve as a remedy for high blood pressure. A 2009 review published in The Cochrane Library assessed the results of three studies that compared CoQ10 to a placebo and found that CoQ10 was associated with significant reductions in blood pressure among those with hypertension. Researchers from the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto in Canada authored this review.

Remedy for Migraines

CoQ10 provides effective migraine relief. A 2005 study authored by a lead researcher from University Hospital Zurich in Switzerland and published in Neurology compared the effects of CoQ10 to those of a placebo among individuals suffering from migraines. Study results showed that the CoQ10 was more efficacious than the placebo was in helping to reduce the frequency of migraines and the number of days that participants experienced headaches or nausea. CoQ10 appears to be a helpful and effective treatment for bothersome migraines.

Promotes Relief from Muscle Pain

The research has suggested that CoQ10 can help alleviate the muscular pain and weakness associated with statin drugs. A Stony Brook University study published in a 2007 edition of The American Journal of Cardiology compared the effects of CoQ10 to those of vitamin E on a group of patients who were suffering from statin-related muscular pain. Results showed that patients who took the CoQ10 supplement experienced a 40 percent reduction in the intensity of their pain, whereas those who took vitamin E did not find any pain relief. CoQ10 is superior to vitamin E for helping to treat muscular pain and could be a helpful adjunctive treatment for individuals who are taking statin drugs.

Helpful Benefits of CoQ10 for Diabetes

The research has found CoQ10 to be particularly beneficial for patients with diabetes. A review of seven studies, led by a researcher from Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, and published in a 2015 edition of the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, analyzed the overall impact of CoQ10 on patients with diabetes. The results of the comprehensive review showed that CoQ10 supplementation tends to help reduce levels of artery-clogging triglycerides in patients who have diabetes. While the study did not find that CoQ10 helped reduce blood sugar, lower triglycerides are certainly a promising effect of this supplement.

Coenzyme Q10 Against Skin Aging

Coenzyme Q10 has properties that can help keep the skin healthy as it ages. In a 2009 study in the journal BioFactors, Japanese scientists assessed the impact of coenzyme Q10 on human skin cells. They found that it helped prevent cell death, and they concluded that coenzyme Q10 can help protect the skin from aging due to its ability to fight against oxidative damage in the outer layer of the skin, called the epidermis. Supplementing with coenzyme Q10 can help reduce the effects of skin damage and help to maintain a youthful appearance, according to the results of this study.

Helped Improve Survival with Heart Failure

Patients experiencing heart failure might see improved outcomes with a CoQ10 supplement. Researchers from the Yulin Traditional Chinese Hospital and the Yulin Second Hospital in China conducted a review of studies involving CoQ10 for a 2017 publication of BMC Cardiovascular Disorders. They reviewed the results of 14 studies that assessed the effects of CoQ10 on patients experiencing heart failure, and the results of the review showed that CoQ10 was more effective than a placebo was in reducing the incidence of death among patients. Supplementing with CoQ10 could help increase the lifespan of people who are suffering from heart failure.

CoQ10 can help increase survival rates in heart failure, decrease triglycerides levels among diabetic patients, alleviate migraines and muscle pain, improve functioning in Parkinson’s disease, and lower blood pressure. This supplement has a variety of health benefits and is especially useful for individuals with certain medical diagnoses. CoQ10 is also beneficial for general health and wellness, because it can help keep blood pressure in a healthy range and prevent debilitating migraines.
